Former President John Mahama has criticized the leadership of various Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) for their lack of vigilance in holding the government of President Akufo-Addo accountable. He suggests that if the CSOs had been more critical, the Akufo-Addo administration could have managed the economy more effectively.
Speaking to the leadership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Accra on November 7, the 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) lamented that his party has been left to be the primary voice seeking accountability from the government without much support from CSOs. Mahama expressed regret that, during a crucial period in the nation, the moral voice of society had remained largely silent.
He emphasized that the signs of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) government’s inability to manage the economy were apparent. He accused President Akufo-Addo of operating a government filled with family and friends, resulting in high levels of corruption and arrogance among some government appointees.
Furthermore, Mahama pledged that if his party were to secure victory in the 2024 elections, they would merge certain government ministries to reduce redundancy and save financial resources. He argued that several ministries had overlapping functions and were unnecessary.
