The Secretary General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, commended former President John Dramani Mahama for what he termed a “game-changer” policy aimed at creating jobs for the unemployed youth. As part of his ‘Building Ghana Tour,’ the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer engaged with key stakeholders, including the country’s mother workers union, to outline the policies the next NDC administration plans to implement for economic transformation.
During the engagement on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, Mahama proposed the concept of a 24-hour economy, involving a three-shift system for workers. Dr. Yaw Baah expressed keen interest in this idea, anticipating its potential to generate a significant number of jobs. He encouraged the youth to prepare for employment opportunities that may arise from this policy ahead of the 2024 elections.
Dr. Yaw Baah acknowledged the novelty of the 24-hour economy concept, emphasizing its transformative potential. He presented the TUC’s manifesto to the former president, indicating the organization’s support for Mahama’s proposed policies.
In response, Mahama regretted that the NDC had been the sole voice advocating for improved conditions for Ghanaians during the Akufo-Addo-led administration. He highlighted the party’s commitment to accountability and speaking up for the voiceless citizens, despite facing criticism for expressing concerns after losing power. Mahama concluded by noting the current impact on the nation and urged for a collective effort to address the challenges.
