The National Democratic Congress (NDC), the largest opposition political party in Ghana, extends its congratulations to Erastus Asare Donkor, a journalist at Multimedia Group Limited (MGL), for his remarkable achievement in winning the P.A.V Ansah Journalist of the Year award at the 27th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards.
Erastus Asare Donkor’s award is a testament to his unwavering dedication to the fight against illegal mining and its adverse impact on Ghana’s environment.
Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of NDC, took to Facebook on Monday, October 30, to describe Erastus as a standard-bearer and urged him to persist in his commendable work.
“Even at the risk of his life and sometimes in the face of intimidation from those in power, Erastus Asare Donkor ventured into various forest reserves and remote areas to expose the underbelly of the Galamsey menace that has assumed alarming proportions under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration,” Mr. Gyamfi wrote.
He further expressed that this recognition would inspire other journalists to fearlessly execute their duties.
“Undoubtedly, this award will motivate and encourage him and others like him to sustain the fight to protect and preserve our environment from the wanton destruction caused by a few greedy individuals.”
Erastus Asare Donkor, a journalist working with JoyFM, JoyNews, and Luv FM, all subsidiaries of The Multimedia Group, received this honor at the event held at the Accra International Conference Centre on Sunday.
Erastus has consistently produced comprehensive reports in recent times, shedding light on the devastating effects of illegal mining, which has ignited national conversations.
The GJA commended Mr. Donkor for his significant contributions to national development, citing his “outstanding quality in journalism standards” in 2022, particularly for his three-part documentary on the destruction caused by illegal mining.
The citation highlighted how he brought attention to a menace that posed a significant threat to the nation, earning him the PAV Ansah Journalist of the Year Award.
In addition to winning the ultimate award, Erastus Asare Donkor, an Assisting News Editor, also received recognition as the Best Reporter on Illegal Mining, underscoring his exceptional reports and documentaries on ‘galamsey’ and its detrimental effects on the country’s human and natural resources.
During the event, Mr. Donkor expressed his gratitude to his colleagues and The Multimedia Group team for their unwavering support.
