Abraham Amaliba, the Director of Conflict Resolution for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed the NDC’s lack of concerns regarding the potential candidacy of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
During an interview on Citi TV, Mr. Amaliba stated that the NDC’s apprehensions would have been more significant if Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen had secured the NPP’s flagbearer position.
“Dr. Bawumia is the least worrisome figure for the NDC. Indeed, we would have been more concerned if it were Alan rather than Bawumia… In fact, if Bawumia emerges as the winner, our campaign will be much easier compared to if it were Alan Kyerematen,” remarked Amaliba.
He also expressed concerns about the circumstances that led to Kyerematen’s withdrawal from the NPP’s flagbearer race, suggesting that they cast a shadow on the democratic process.
“The withdrawal of Alan, along with the reasons he provided, in my view, raises questions about the integrity of our democracy. Alan did not focus on the numbers… he emphasized the intensity of threats and intimidation. When internal elections involve physical altercations, how does that improve the democratic process? And that was just the preliminary round. What about the upcoming one in November? How many more confrontations will occur?” emphasized Mr. Amaliba.
Kyerematen withdrew from the NPP’s flagbearer race on September 5, 2023, leaving Dr. Bawumia and three other contenders for the NPP’s presidential primaries scheduled for November 2023.
The NDC has already nominated John Damani Mahama as its flagbearer for the December 2024 elections.
