Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has submitted a Right to Information (RTI) request to several government agencies seeking information about the activities of Heritage Imperial Company Limited within the Apamprama forest reserve.
The government agencies that received the RTI request include the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Forestry Commission, the Attorney-General’s Department, and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources. The motivation behind Gyamfi’s request is the recent advice from the Attorney-General’s office to the police.
The Attorney-General’s advice stated that Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the former chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), failed to provide sufficient evidence to support a report for the prosecution of individuals involved in illegal mining activities.
Gyamfi’s RTI request aims to obtain information that can assist the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General’s Department in conducting comprehensive investigations into the matter. The primary goal is to ensure that those responsible for any violations of environmental or mining laws are held accountable.
The Apamprama forest reserve is ecologically significant in Ghana, and concerns about illegal mining activities in the area have been growing.
